About |
Here at West Salem High School we have a commitment to ensuring that all students are prepared for life after high school. Part of this preparation is given by the counselors through classroom instruction with the Personal Education Plan (PEP) and Career Information System (CIS) activities completed from freshman to senior year. A second part of this is hosting college and career events such as visitations, admissions presentations, parent/family nights, and having resources on hand (be sure to visit the College and Career Center!).
This year we are adding a two more layers. The first layer comes from partnering with the Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC) Access to Student enrichment Programs In reach of Everyone (ASPIRE) program. With the support of the Salem Keizer Education Foundation (SKEF), ASPIRE is now part of all middle and high school college and career preparation for Salem Keizer. We are the first school district to adopt the ASPIRE model. The second layer comes from adding after school tutoring in core subjects in order to support students in their curriculum preparation for after high school. |
ASPIRE |
How the program works is that interested students meet one on one with a mentor during the school day to receive personalized support in choosing a college, completing applications, finding scholarships, looking for jobs, etc. Mentors are community volunteers (college students, parents, professionals, etc.) who have been screen and approved by the Salem Keizer School District and trained by ASPIRE in college and career preparation and opportunities.
Becoming an ASPIRE student is easy: the program is open to ANY and ALL students. Simply fill out an ASPIRE permission form, have a parent/guardian sign it, and turn it in to the Counseling Center. From there the student will meet with the ASPIRE Coordinator, Alissa Chase, to figure out available times to meet with a mentor. Meeting times are to happen outside of core instruction time, such as lunch, an aide or elective period, or early release/late arrival. Permission forms can be found in the Counseling Center, on the ASPIRE board, or you can sign up by filling out a contact card. If you are interested in becoming a mentor for ASPIRE please fill out a contact card and Alissa will respond to you with more information on the process! |
Tutoring |
Tutoring will be taking place in the Counseling Center from 2:30pm to 3:30pm Mondays through Thursdays and will be available in the core subjects of English, Social Science, Math, and Science. Tutors will be area college students who are volunteering their time and will assist students starting at a drop in basis where students can freely come and ask for help. Once tutors are finalized, their schedules and topics will be posted on the Tutoring page.
